Your CTC is fan fiction.
Your take-home is the real story. Seven traps, leaked from the HR side of the table. Read before you sign.
Trap 01 · The PF double dipTwo PF cuts. One CTC. Zero rupees in your bank.
- Your 12%: on the payslip, out of your gross.
- The company's 12%: quietly counted inside your CTC. Legal. Just never paid as salary.
- Both go to your PF and pension. Not your bank.
- FYI: the PF wage ceiling is ₹25,000 since 17 Sept 2026, so PF on the ceiling is now ₹3,000 a month each.
Ask HR: "What's my in-hand after both PF lines?"
Trap 02 · The gratuity ghostLives in your CTC. Appears after 5 years.
- That "~4.8% of Basic" is never paid monthly. It's a promise, not a payment.
- Permanent staff: usually 5 years' service. Leave earlier and the ghost leaves with you.
- Fixed-term contract? Pro-rata at the end.
Ask HR: "Is gratuity inside my CTC, or over and above it?"
Trap 03 · The boomerang bonusIt flies in on Day 1. It flies back at F&F.
- It pads Year-1 CTC. In Year 2 it's gone: a pay cut with better PR.
- Leave early? Some clauses claw back the gross amount, even the tax already deducted.
Ask HR: "Pro-rata or full? Gross or net? In writing, please."
Trap 04 · The silent premium"Free" health insurance. Some offers bill it to your CTC.
- Some offers count the group premium inside your CTC. A benefit, sponsored by… you.
- Adding parents? That's often a monthly deduction from your salary.
- Co-pay = you pay a share of every claim.
Ask HR: "Premium inside CTC? Parents' cost per month? Any co-pay?"
Trap 05 · Written in the starsVariable pay: payable if the stars align.
- Company target. Team target. Your bell-curve slot. Appraisal-season mood.
- EY Future of Pay 2026: average performers got 60–80% of target variable.
- On notice on payout day? Often, ₹0.
Ask HR: "What % did my band actually get last year?"
Trap 06 · The pin-code taxSame CTC. Different city. Different in-hand.
- Professional tax depends on your state. The Constitution caps it at ₹2,500 a year.
- Some states charge it monthly, some half-yearly, some not at all.
Ask HR: "Which state's PT applies to me, and how much?"
Trap 07 · The benefits buffetIf it needs a bill, it isn't salary.
- Conveyance, phone, wellness, transport: cash, or reimbursement against bills only?
- Car lease, relocation, incentives: conditional? Repayable? Or just CTC filler?
Ask HR: "Which lines reach my account every month, no bills needed?"
The verdictBefore you accept, make HR explain every line.
Most of it is legal. Most of it never reaches your bank. Want someone to read your actual offer? That's exactly what Don't Sign Yet (₹299) is for.
